David Wilshire

David Wilshire (born 16 September 1943, Bristol) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom.

He is Member of Parliament for Spelthorne in Surrey, and was first elected in the 1987 general election. He is currently a Conservative whip in the House of Commons.

He was educated at Kingswood School, Bath and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

Wilshire is outspoken in his opposition to rights for lesbian and gay people. While leader of Wansdyke council in the 1980s, he regularly wrote articles in local newspapers expressing opposition to the lifestyles of homosexual people. In 1987 he introduced Section 28 as an amendment to the Local Government Bill. The amendment made it illegal for local authorities to "promote homosexuality or ... promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality". The ban was eventually reversed by Parliament in 2003.
