Darijo Srna [ˈdaːriɔ ˈsrna] (born May 1, 1982 in Metković) is a Croatian football player who, as of 2004, plays for Shakhtar Donetsk. He plays in the right midfielder position for Croatia, but he plays in the right-back position for Shakhtar Donetsk. He has scored many goals from free kicks, and often makes precise crosses. However his crucial saved penalty by Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi against Japan at World Cup 2006 played a part in Croatia failing to advance to the second round.
Srna started his career in Hajduk Split, where he was considered one of their best players. In 2003 he was sold, along with Stipe Pletikosa, to Shakhtar Donetsk. Srna was part of the Croatian national team in Euro 2004, where he played in two games. He also was part of the Croatian squad in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where he scored one spectacular goal from a free kick 32 metres out 1:52 minutes into the game in the 2-2 draw against Australia in the last match of the group phase.
In September 2006 he was dropped from the Croatian squad for a Euro 2008 qualifying match with Russia by coach Slaven Bilic, because of a late night partying in a local disco along with teammates Bosko Balaban and Ivica Olic.
After the world cup two time European Cup winners SL Benfica were after the players Signature but nothing materialized, with what many consider Benfica bidding again in the Winter Market.
Five time European cup winners Liverpool are also thought to be interested as they consider him the long term replacement for Steve Finnan. French side PSG are also believed to be chasing the signature of the croatian star.
Srna was considered the hero of the nation when he came on as a substitute against Macedonia in a Euro2008 qualifying match and scored shortly after from another free kick which was perfectly shot into the right corner of the goal. In the 88th minute he created an assisting cross which found fellow teammate Eduardo Da Silva and allowed him to score and snatch a win for Croatia
