Dari Taylor

Dari Jean Taylor (born 13 December 1944, Rhondda as Dari Jean Jones) is a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom.

She has been Member of Parliament for Stockton South (including the Hartburn area), since 1997. Stockton South is a fairly affluent area of the North-East, atypical of the North's social class breakdown. Stockton South has a higher proportion of home-owners than those renting properties, in contrast to most Northern seats.

In 1997, Stockton South was seen as a model for the country as a whole, in terms of distribution of wealth and ethnic make-up, this led to many visits by the elite from the three main parties in an attempt to win votes. It was believed that it Labour won the seat, they would be able to win a majority in Parliament. Dari Taylor beat Tim Devlin, the Conservative MP for the Constituency, in 1997, and again in 2001. Similar to the national scale, Stockton South had a markably lower turnout in 2001, but still voted for Labour. In 2005, Dari won again, this time against actor James Gaddas. Despite her losing 2000 votes, neither opposition party capitalised, leaving Dari in a strong position if she chooses to run for a fourth term.

Taylor was a councillor on Sunderland Metropolitan Council from 1986 until 1997. She is the daughter of Dan Jones, former MP for Burnley.
