Dahlem is a locality in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf borough of southwestern Berlin. It is one of the most affluent parts of the city and is home to the main campus of the Free University of Berlin, several other institutions of higher education and research, the Berlin Botanical Garden, and many museums. On weekdays it is crawling with university students who arrive on the U-Bahn.
The first written account of Dahlem dates to the year 1275. In 1920, it was amalgamated into the city of Berlin. During the Cold War Dahlem lay in West Berlin. Because so many of the Berlin's artistic, cultural, and educational institutions lay in the east, duplicates were established in Dahlem during the 1950s and 60s for West Berliners. Until 2001, when Berlin's borough system was reorganized, the district was part of the borough of Zehlendorf.
