Confidence and Paranoia was the fifth Red Dwarf episode to air.

Lister falls ill after entering a contaminated area of Red Dwarf trying to find Kochanski's hologram disc which Rimmer has hidden. Lister had three hallucinations which became solid:

• Raining fish in Lister's and Rimmer's sleeping quarters.
• The Mayor of Warsaw spontaneously exploding.
• Two unwelcome guests on-board, Lister's Confidence and Paranoia.

Lister's Confidence helps Lister figure out where Rimmer had put Kochanski's hologram disk (which was the solar panel outside their sleeping quarters). Eventually both Lister's Confidence and Paranoia are gone (Paranoia was killed by Confidence and Confidence took his space helmet off while he was in space, making him explode). What was even worse for Lister is that Rimmer placed Kochanski's disk somewhere else and replaced it with of copy of Rimmer's data in another disk, making two Rimmers.

• Rimmer: Holly, put a trace on Paranoia.

Holly: What's a trace?

Rimmer: It's space jargon. It means find him.

Holly: No, it doesn't. You just made it up to be cool.

• Confidence: If you're hot, take your helmet off.

Lister: I'll die!

Confidence: Why?

Lister: There's no oxygen out here!

Confidence: Hey, Oxygen's for losers, come on!

Lister: I need oxygen!

Confidence: You don't need anything, King, you're the King!

Lister: And you're crazy!

Confidence: Who told you you needed oxygen, huh? Some loser, who was trying to make you feel small. I'll take mine off first. We'll soon see who the crazy one is around here.

Lister: No!

[Confidence explodes.]

• Kochanski's hologram projection box is labelled "Kochanski, C.Z."
• In the exterior scene, after Confidence exploded, Craig Charles dived to the floor, apparently in some pain. The crew stepped in to investigate, only to be informed by Craig that he was 'only acting'.
• By using freeze-frame in the scene where the mayor explodes, it is obvious that a split-screen is used, as Rimmer does not get illuminated by the flame. Of course, this effects flaw fits the circumstances, seeing as, being made of light himself, Rimmer wouldn't be illuminated anyway.
• This episode was originally going to be the last of the series, and would have concluded with Kochanski being successfully resurrected, and everyone living happily ever after. After an earlier script, in which Rimmer went insane and stole bits of Lister's body, was deemed too rubbish, Rob and Doug came up with the idea of having two Rimmers together, so the cliffhanger ending to this episode was invented.
