Cone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cone (from the Greek κώνος, Latin conu) is a basic geometrical shape. It may also be:
- A volcanic cone, a mountain formed by material ejected from a volcanic vent
- A conifer cone, a seed-bearing organ on conifer plants
- A cone cell, in anatomy, a type of light-sensitive cell found along with rods in the retina of the eye
- A pyrometric cone, in ceramic manufacture, a contolled mixture of minerals used to gauge the extent of firing
- An ice cream cone, an edible container in which ice cream is served, shaped like an inverted cone open at its top
- A traffic cone, a brightly colored cone-shaped plastic object commonly used as a temporary traffic barrier or warning sign
- An optical fiber that tapers almost to a point
- The part of a loudspeaker that moves the air, creating sound waves constantly
- A cone snail, a carnivorous molluscs of the family Conidae
- An Elizabethan collar, a cone-shaped collar worn by pets
- A person acting stupid (a reference to a dunce cap or to being as smart as a traffic cone).
- A colloquial Australian term for cannabis, most commonly a bong load or 'bowl' of cannabis
As a proper name, it may mean:
- Cone (software), a text-based e-mail client and news client for Unix-like operating systems.
- Cone, the nickname of Jason McCaslin, bassist for the Canadian band Sum 41
- Fairfax M. Cone, an American advertising executive
In mathematics:
- The cone (geometry), a basic solid shape
- A cone (linear algebra), a subset of vector space closed under positive scaling
- A convex cone, a special case of the above that is closed under convex combinations
- A projective cone, a similar (but more general) concept in projective geometry
- The cone (topology) of a set X, namely the union of all line segments connecting a fixed point to points of X
- The mapping cone (homological algebra) of a map of chain complexes
- A conical surface, generated by a moving line with one fixed point
- A cone graph, in graph theory, a graph with a universal vertex
- A cone (category theory), a family of morphisms resembling a geometric cone
- A cone (formal languages), an abstract family of languages that contains the languages with a regular grammar
In forestry:
- A skid cone, a cone like object place before a log. This makes pulling the log easier for the tractor or vtt
Moreover,
- A conic section is any curve obtained by cutting a conical surface by an arbitrary plane
- In geometry conical projection usually means central projection or perspective projection
- In cartography, however, a conic (or conical) projection maps the spherical surface of the Earth to a conical surface, that is then unrolled onto a plane; see map projection
