St. Louis holds a unique place in the establishment of American colleges and universities. The city is home to the internationally recognized Washington University, a private research university well known for its prestigious schools of Medicine, Architecture, and Social work, currently ranked 12th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.[1] The university's School of Law, founded in 1867, is the oldest west of the Mississippi River. The oldest university west of the Mississippi River, Saint Louis University, was founded in 1818. The St. Louis metropolitan area is also home to at least 26 other institutions of higher learning.
