From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cirigliano is a town and comune in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata.

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HILLTOWNS IN SOUTHERN ITALY—CIRIGLIANO (chi-ri-llia-no)

Cirigliano is about 656 meters above sea level. It has about 600 inhabitants. It is an ancient town of which it’s origin is uncertain. It is surrounded with walls and towers, Cirigliano is a typical medieval village which still has a castle tower with an oval base and a chapel within it’s walls. It has a 17th century “Pieta” in a decorated wood temple.
Cirigliano has many religious festivals, one such festival is the Festival of San Giacomo on July 25, the patron saint of the town, as well as Carnival in February.
You can taste many homemade and home grown products such as olive oil, salted meats (sausage, sopressata), home-made pasta, as well as home-made cheeses. While visiting here, you can still witness handicraft masters, who make baskets, embroidery, lace of the best quality, as well as wood cutters, who make spoons, forks and tools for making bread. There are also hand-made goods made of reed and straw.
These fine handcrafters preserve the sense of tradition, and old world style.

But, the most important part of this town and the surrounding region is the hospitality of the people. When staying in this land there is a sense of peace. The silence, the healthy air, the green color of the woods and hills inspire a calmness which is kept within you throughout your stay.
