Storytelling is an ancient custom in Somali culture,love of cinema in Somalia is a modern continuation of this tradition of storytelling. In the 70s and the early 80s the popular Somali musicals also known as Riwaayado in Somali language were the main driving force behind the Somali film industry. In 1987 Somali Film Director Abdulkadir Ahmed Said released the Short film Geedka Nolosha (tree of life) which in 1988 won the Best Short film category on the Turin Film Festival[1]

When the Central government collapsed in 1991 chaos erupted across Somalia and Somali film agencies stationed in Mogadishu were abandoned. In 1994 Soraye Mire a Somali female director received widespread praise for here critically acclaimed movie Fire eyes which documented the suffering of women going under FGM. The film due to the popular support of anti-FGM groups earned Soraye Mire a chance to take her stand against FGM global when she together with Mimi Ramsey were invited on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Although it's nowhere near the level of Hollywood, the new generation of Movies from the Somali Film Industry also known as Somalywood is taking shape and becoming popular in the Somali Communities of the Diaspora and back in Somalia. The Somali Directors AbdiSalam Ato and AbdiMalik Isak are on the forefront of this revolution. Somalis are great fans of Bollywood movies and Somali Films are usually love stories mixed with Hollywood orientated action.
