"Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" was the second single from beautifulgarbage, the third album by Garbage, released worldwide in January 2002.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of "Cherry Lips" singles was donated to the International Red Cross.

"Cherry Lips" was a massive hit in Australia (receiving a Gold Certification), where it was released just as Garbage were touring the Big Day Out Festival. In the UK, the single peaked at a somewhat disappointing #22 but spent three weeks in the top 40.

"Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)" was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the last month of the 2001 sessions for 'Beautifulgarbage'. Originally given the working title of 'Wonderjam', the band came up with the track just as the group were about to start mixing the third record.

Probably the most 'pop' song Garbage have ever recorded, it features not only hand-clap drum loops, but also guitarist Steve Marker playing a tuba through a wah-wah pedal.

Shirley wrote the lyrics in the song as a tribute to writer "JT LeRoy", pseudonym of Laura Albert, with whom she has an email friendship, after reading "his" two novels Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. The song is loosely based on the two novels, apparently referencing the character 'Cherry', a cross-dressing child-prostitute from the novel Sarah.

The song is dedicated to "The Terminator" (another alias of JT LeRoy) and "anyone who is willing to try to survive".

The song was released as a single in January 2002. It reached the top tens in Australia, Lithuania, Portugal, Italy and Ecuador. Like the previous single, it was a success in mostly minor markets, whilst the band were themselves faltering in the major ones.

In the UK it peaked at #22 and fell out of the chart after hanging on for four weeks. Although the band wished for the single to be released in America, their record company did not issue it.

"Cherry Lips"" was backed by the B-sides "Enough Is Never Enough" and "Use Me" on UK and Australian releases. The earlier Japanese release of the single included just remixes of the title track.

"Enough Is Never Enough" was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the 2000 sessions for beautifulgarbage. It was originally titled "Pay You Back".

"Enough Is Never Enough" is a huge rocking number with big bass and drums, writhing guitar riffs and fierce but warm vocals.

When recording "Enough Is Never Enough", Shirley changed many of the lyrics after they failed to work within the context of the song, necessitating the name change as well.

"Enough Is Never Enough" is published by Deadarm Music/Almo Music Corp (ASCAP) and Vibecrusher Music/Irving Music, Inc (BMI).

The song's full legal title is "Enough Is Never Enough". It is registered at ASCAP as 'Title Code: 350425195' and at BMI as 'BMI Work #6181405'.

"Enough Is Never Enough" has not yet been performed live.

The promotional video for Cherry Lips was shot in New York in October 2001 and was directed by Joseph Kahn. The video featured a newly blonde Shirley performing an invisible strip-tease.

After initial release MTV requested the video be re-edited for daytime broadcast, after taking fault with scenes involving Shirley Manson stomping on lightbulbs. It is this re-edited version that can be found as a CD-ROM extra on "Cherry Lips" singles.

Remixes for this song were completed by UK house act MaUVe, New York DJ Roger Sanchez, producer Howie B and Girls Against Boys bassist Eli Janney.

In 2005, the band remixed "Cherry Lips" themselves, giving it a rock make over, and the title "Le Royale mix". This version can be found on the UK "Why Do You Love Me" DVD single.

"Cherry Lips" was first performed live at Garbage's one-off in-store concert at Chicago's Virgin Megastore on 2nd October 2001. Shirley, however forgot some of the lyrics during the first verse.

The song remained a live favourite and has been a staple of the Garbage live set since.

Cherry Lips has been performed live on TV shows CD:UK, Top Of The Pops, Popworld, Pepsi Chart Show, Later with Jools Holland (UK), The Tonight Show (US) and Channel V (OZ)

"Cherry Lips" has also been used for several advertisements including ones by music channel VH-1 and UK TV channel STV.

"Cherry Lips" also features on the PlayStation 2 game 'Amplitude' which was released in March 2003. However, while playing the "Cherry Lips" level, the film clip snippets playing in the background are taken from the Breaking Up The Girl video clip, a different Garbage release.

"Cherry Lips" came in at #11 in the 2001 Triple J Hottest 100.

'Cherry Lips" was one of the theme songs to the WWE Divas lingere fashion show that was dubbed the Thong-A-Thong that was held in 2002 on TNN (Now Spike TV).

Shirley Manson: "It came whirling out of left field. One minute we were discussing getting started on mixing and we got this really daft keyboard groove going and before I knew it I was in my little booth shoving down some scratch vocal ideas and the whole thing sounded so different from everything else on the record that it seemed worth pursuing".

Shirley Manson: "It's an adrenaline rush. I think it's probably the most celebratory song we've ever written".
