The Calamarain have appeared in only one Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, Déjà Q. In this episode, the Calamarain attempt to abduct Q from the Enterprise, and attack the ship when the crew tries to protect Q. It is revealed later that Q had tormented the Calamarain in the past, and they are now seeking vengeance.

This species has also been featured in Star Trek books, notably in Star Trek The Q Continuum.

In this series, the Q at the age that Picard knows him takes Picard back in time to witness past events that are pertinent to Picard's mission. Q changes himself and Picard into Calamarain entities so that they can blend in and "hear" the aliens. Picard discovers that the Calamarain, known at this time in the past as the Coulalakritous, are highly intelligent, and a community of beings engaged in endless intellectual discussions.

Some half million years ago, Q had made the acquaintance of an entity named 0, and 0 wanted to harness the Calamarain as his superluminal transportation. 0 had "frozen" (more precisely, deposited) the Calamarain when they would not cooperate with him. However, thanks to Q's intervention, they were not compressed to the point of becoming a black hole, but were eventually able to regain their gaseous form. After other very deadly acts, 0 was exiled from the galaxy.

Years after the events in Deja Q, the Calamarain temporarily cooperated with Q and the Enterprise to restrain 0 as he had managed to get back into the galaxy. In the day prior to 0's reentry, the Calamarain attacked the Enterprise as it approached the edge of the galaxy, and did not relent when the Enterprise commander offered to back off, due to the Enterprise' association with Q.
