Bremen is one of the main characters of Terry Brooks' novel, First King of Shannara. Bremen travels to the Valley of Shale and, summoning the dead Druids out of the Hadeshorn, he is shown what is needed to destroy the Warlock Lord. He also learns of the existence (and location) of the Black Elfstone, a magical weapon that if stolen by the Warlock Lord would give him tremendous destructive power. He recovers the Eilt Druin from the tower of Paranor, so he can use the amulet as a component in the Sword that would be able to fulfill his goal of defeating the Warlock Lord. He receives information on how to forge such a mighty weapon as this from Cogline, an old friend, and has the sword made by an expert weaponsmith named Urprox Screl. On the way to Arborlon, Bremen meets Allanon as a small child in the burned city of Varfleet. Bremen chooses Allanon as his Druid apprentice and teaches him Druidic magic. Bremen gives the sword to the warrior King of the Elves, Jerle Shannara, who wields it ineffectively on the Warlock Lord, leaving the task of eliminating him to Shea Ohmsford in The Sword of Shannara. Later, Bremen feels his time in this life has run out and goes with new apprentice Allanon to the Valley of the Shale. He is taken into the Hadeshorn to be with the other Druids that have died.
