The Book of Life

The Book of Life is a movie that was released in 1998, and was made by Hal Hartley. In the film, Jesus returns to earth on the eve of the new millennium planning to bring about the apocalypse, but finds himself surprisingly enamored of humanity. It stars Martin Donovan as Jesus, and PJ Harvey as Mary Magdalene. William S. Burroughs has a bit part (voice only) as a radio preacher. Yo La Tengo appear as a Salvation Army band.

  • When Jesus checks into a hotel under the name D.W. Griffith, Hartley is making a little reference to pioneer filmmaker D. W. Griffith. Hartley explained also it contrasted Griffith who was at the start of cinema, with The Book of Life which in a way at the end of cinema, since it was one of the first films shot on digital video.
