In popular music, blackened thrash metal alternatively named black/thrash or thrash/black metal (depending on which style is the most dominant of both) is a fusion genre which fuses thrash metal with elements of black metal or vice versa.

The origin of the term blackened thrash metal is uncertain; it may have been developed alongside the comparable term blackened death metal, though some believe it was the band Melechesh that coined the term, the band also came up with terms such as Mesopotamian metal and Sumerian Thrashing Black Metal .

The roots of blackend thrash metal can be traced back to the first Hellhammer demos, early Bathory works,Venoms debut Welcome To Hell ,and three German thrash metal bands(Destruction,Kreator,Sodom). Most noticeable in Sodom's In The Sign Of Evil Which may be the first true example of blackened thrash. It can also be seen in the early first wave of black metal acts.

The sound of blackened thrash metal is often difficult to recognize, considering early black metal and thrash metal are closely related, as many of black metal's forefathers are sometimes referred to as “blackened thrash metal” (i.e. Venom and Celtic Frost). Also, many black metal bands (such as Absu, Immortal, Scorned Flesh and Melechesh) have adopted thrash metal influences, often from bands such as Destruction, Sodom, Slayer and Kreator (Destruction, Sodom and Kreator are known to have adopted early black metal influences from Venom).
