Beirut Central District
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beirut Central District (BCD), popularly known as Centre Ville, is the name given to Beirut’s historical and geographical core, the “vibrant financial, commercial, and administrative hub of the country.”[1] It is situated on the city’s northern coast and includes many monuments and places of importance to the citizens of Beirut, including Martyr's Square. The area has been criticized, however, of being devoid of any soul and culture, and is seen by many as being rather sterile.
Centre Ville is sometimes called Solidere, after the company of the same name that has undertaken reconstruction of the neighborhood after the Lebanese Civil War (see Solidere). Rafic Hariri, Solidere's founder, is credited with the successful implementation of the redevelopment plan, but is also blamed by many for bankrupting the country in order to embellish his companys (and, by extension, his families) fortunes.[citation needed]
