Becoming Jane is a Miramax film that was released in 2007. The film is based on the early life of author Jane Austen, who is portrayed by Anne Hathaway, and her possible flirtations with Thomas Langlois Lefroy. Dame Maggie Smith and Julie Walters also appear in this picture, produced by an Irish production company.

Although the film goes well beyond what is proven fact in assuming a real relationship between Austen and Lefroy, the speculative original screenplay was inspired by real events, which were chronicled in a book by Jon Spence, a historical consultant on the film.

Spence's book, titled Becoming Jane Austen, was published by Hambledon & London in hardback in 2003 (ISBN 1852853948) and as a paperback in 2006 (ISBN 1-84725046-7).
