Beast Rider

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beast Rider, in the fictional Star Wars Expanded Universe, is the name for the descendants of the outcast criminals of the city of Iziz on the planet Onderon who managed to control and tame the great beasts of the planet. They appear in the PC/Xbox videogame Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.

Onderon is renowned for having one of the most aggressive ecosystems in the known galaxy, to include large reptilian creatures caled boma, similar in some respects to the dewback of Tatooine and the bol of Dantooine, but fiercely territorial. The most fierce and renonwed creature of Onderon is the drexl, a flying beast with "teeth the size of your arm" that the most bold and skilled of the beast riders have tamed, which were used by the beast riders to attack Iziz during the course of Onderon history, a period known as the "Beast Wars". Iziz is sprinkled with air defense guns to ward off beast riders who attack Iziz from the skies mounted on drexl.

Iziz was created as a walled refuge by the humans of Onderon from the aggressive beasts of the planet. Criminals were exiled from the city and left to the mercy of the beasts, but some survived and managed to tame the wildlife that the inhabitants of Iziz thought would dispatch them. In doing so, the Beast Riders created a second civilization on Onderon that was in near constant competition and war with the inhabitants of Iziz.

Fifty years prior to the events in KOTOR II, the chief of the Beast Riders married an Iziz princess to create a peace between the two civilizations, which endured, albeit with some unease, even in the face of the Iziz civil war that broke out between the forces of Queen Talia and General Vaklu. Since then, many beast riders have settled in Iziz and become little more than thugs, much to the distress of their brethren who still tame beasts, mainly for sale to Ithorians who are engaged in the restoration of Telos, which was bombarded by the Sith during the Jedi Civil War.
