The team was originally going to be a member of the Eastern Indoor Football League, but left for the AIFA soon after the "League Showcase/Jamboree" held inside the Mahoning Valley HitMen's "ThunderDome".
The teams original head coach was Ted Coleman, but the two sides failed to reach a contract agreement.[1]. Not too long after that, Coleman announced he was filing a lawsuit against the Blackbirds. Later on, the team named Chris Simpson (formerly of the San Angelo Stampede Express) to be their new head coach. [2]
