Between the years of 161 CE to 363 CE, Assyria was a province of the Roman Empire, roughly situated in modern-day northern Iraq. This area was highly contested with the Parthian/Sassanian empires and Armenia. Rome only gained full control of this area in 230 CE after brief control in 161-165 and, under Septimus Severus, in 194-199. Two Legions were stationed in this province to protect it against Sassanian incursions. The province was lost under Jovian in 363, after a hasty peace deal so he could head for Constantinople to consolidate his power.

The regions from north to south were: Moxoene, Rehimene, Corduene, Zabdicene, and Adiabene.

The towns from north to south were: Hiaspis, Bezabde (Cizre), Sisara, Nisibis (Nusaybin), Thilsaphata, Singara (Beled Sinjar), Nineveh, Hatra (el Hadr) and Ur.[1]
