Assomada (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: Asomada) is the capital of the municipality of Santa Catarina, which comprises the central western portions and much of the interior of the Sotavento island of Santiago in Cape Verde. The city of Assomada is home to 7,067 people. Assomada is linked with a highway south to Praia and north to Tarrafal and a road to São Lourenço dos Orgãos. Assomada is located 64 km N of Praia, NW of São Lourenço dos Orgãos and S of Tarrafal. The mountains surround Assomada and forests, farmlands and hills dominate the rest of the area around Assomada.
The city of Assomada is home to 14.2% of the area of the municipality of Santa Catarina, whose other main settlement is the town of Picos. Assomada is subdivided into 22 neighborhoods and the urban area is about 213 ha or 2.13 km². In 2010, the city is projected to grow to 550 ha or 5.5 km² with about 12,000 to 13,000 people throughout the municipality.
Assomada has an important commercial role and enjoys a peculiar atmosphere, a combination of urban areas and fields. The centre of the city features a strong presence of Portuguese-style colonial buildings. The city continues its notable population growth since the independence of Cape Verde, a great part divides an influx of persons coming from the interior and other parts of the island in search for work.
The market of Assomada is one of the largest on the island of Santiago, with enormous varieties of agricultural and other products. It is the central collection and distribution point for products produced throughout the surrounding countryside, and while the consumer-focused market is very large and vibrant, the majority of the trade is between middlemen (rabidantis) who intend to bring the produce to larger national and international markets.
Assomade is also home to one of Cape Verde's few museums: the 'Museu da Tabanka, which sits outside the city square. The building was built by the Repartição da Fazenda e dos Correios which is considered a cultural and historic heritage site for its architectural origins, and doubles as the actual Assomada Cultural Centre when it hosts parades, traditional concerts, and other cultural events. The Museu da Tabanka organizes temporary expos and diverse spectacles, looking and provides its cultural life in the municipality of Santa Catarina and the interior of the island of Santiago. The museum features a valuable collection of local writing and paintings as well.
