The Hopduvel (Hopdevil) is the symbol for the storm that infested Asse-Ternat by the end of the month august 1970. The many bines (hop vines) that the region of Asse-Ternat were rich, introduced much damage and the hop vines smacked against the ground. The ' hopduvel ' in the region of Asse is a term that is part of the daily live, but was invented by the hop farmers and was symbolised by the mental father of the “Hopduvelfeesten” (Hop Devil Festival) Eugeen Van den Broeck. The Hopduvelfeesten are organised after the cultivation of the hop in order to have a good cultivation the following years. This is symbolic done by burning the hopduvel’s that have been build by the local farmers and for which a contest is organised to elect the nicest (ugliest) Hopduvel.
