The Asagiri class destroyer was built in the mid-1980's and late 1980's and is in service with Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. This class of general purpose destroyer is mainly tasked with ASW and ASUW duties, like its predecessor Hatsuyuki class destroyers.

Yamagiri and Asagiri are converted Training Vessel.
