Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT, دانشگاه صنعتی امیرکبیر), formerly named Tehran Polytechnic, is the first technical university in Iran and known as the best engineering school in the country. The university was established in 1958 under the name of Tehran Polytechnic. It began activities with 5 engineering departments. In 1978, the university was renamed to Amirkabir University of Technology. In 1982, AUT under went a series of reforms in education and research which put forward a new era in its activities. At present, AUT offers, with an overall number of 7000 students, undergraduate and post graduate programs . It has fourteen engineering departments, five research centers and an associated university complex located at the town of Tafresh near Tehran. AUT enjoys the co-operation of about 480 full-time teaching members and 550 administrative employees. The University, in its long term policy-making targeted at postgraduate training, has organized:

The university's executive branch consists of four departments which enjoy the active participation of various councils in planning and administering their strategic affairs. In addition to the executive departments, there are fourteen educational departments.
