Amberle Elessedil is a fictional character from The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks. The Elfstones of Shannara is the second book in the The Sword of Shannara trilogy.
Amberle was a female Chosen. She was the first female Chosen selected by the Ellcrys in 500 years. She is also Eventine’s granddaughter.
Her selection as a Chosen was quite controversial at that time since the Ellcrys, a powerful tree, rarely selects female Chosen. The Ellcrys felt that her death was coming and thus chose Amberle to help give birth to a new Ellcrys. However, in their conversations, Amberle became quite frightened by the Ellcrys, feeling that she was losing her identity to the tree. As a result she fled from her duties as a Chosen. When the demons started breaking through the Forbidding (a long standing prison-void for the demons) that the Ellcrys maintains with her power, they slew all the Chosen except for Amberle.
Allanon sends Wil Ohmsford (who had the use of the Elfstones) to protect Amberle while she travelled to the Bloodfire to renew the seed of the Ellcrys. In addition, they are aided by Crispin and half a dozen Elven Hunters. During their journey, a demon named the Reaper stalks them in an attempt to kill Amberle and stop the elves from renewing the Ellcrys and restoring the forbidding.
She sacrifices a love she finds for Wil Ohmsford in order that life continue. This is the decision that Allanon could not tell her, because she had to discover the truth for herself.
After defeating the Reaper and placing the seed of Ellcrys into the Bloodfire, Amberle and Wil return to Arborlon with the aid of Perk, a Wing Rider-in-training. In order to save the elves, Amberle becomes the new Ellycrys and locks the demons away in the Forbidding once again.
