Everybody's All-American

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Everybody's All-American is a novel by longtime Sports Illustrated contributor Frank Deford. Deford's novel was later made into a motion picture directed by Taylor Hackford.

The novel tells the story of a famous college football player at the fictional University of Louisiana. The main character, Gavin Grey, wins the Heisman Trophy and then goes onto a professional career, but is sidetracked by marital difficulties and subsequent involvement with the Ku Klux Klan, among other misjudgments.

The work has often been said to be a fictionalization of the life of Billy Cannon, who was a famous college football player at the Louisiana State University (LSU). Cannon won the Heisman Trophy and went onto a professional football career with the Houston Oilers and, then the Oakland Raiders. After he finished football, Cannon became a dentist and was later prosecuted for counterfeiting. However, Deford denies that there is any connection between his work and the real-life Dr. Cannon.

The movie, which was filmed in Baton Rouge, LA, makes the connection more obvious. In the movie, Grey (played by Dennis Quaid) actually plays his college ball at LSU, where he is the captain of the school's 1958 championship team (just like Billy Cannon led LSU's 1958 championship team).
