Adamantium

Adamantium is a fictional chemical substance, often a metal. The name comes from adamant or adamantine combined with the Neo-Latin ending -ium, and resembles the form of the names of the chemical elements. In its classical meaning, adamant referred either to any hard substance, including diamond, or a hypothetical impenetrable mineral; thus, adamantium often refers to a fictional impenetrable element or substance.
Uses of adamantium or similar substances in other works include:
- Several characters in the Marvel Universe use adamantium equipment, or are themselves made out of adamantium; it first appeared in Avengers. The character Wolverine (X-Men) is particularly well known for having an adamantium-coated skeleton and retractable claws.
- Armor and weapons in The Elder Scrolls games.
- Weapons and armor in Ancient Domains of Mystery computer game. Adamantium ore can also be found.
- In the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe, in which it is used highly by the Space Marines and the Imperial Guard, in their weapons, armour and vehicles. While still retaining its mythical properties as portrayed, there are even more powerful substances which border on the magical or impossible.
- Armor in Master of Orion and Master of Orion II.
- Weapons in Master of Magic. Built of adamantium ore, a terrain bonus.
- Handclock of Atomic Betty.
- Rope in Untold Legends.
- In the Final Fantasy video game series to create incredibly powerful weapons and armor, including in Final Fantasy I to make that world's version of Excalibur. Also, there is a recurring monster in the Final Fantasy series called the Adamantoise, a giant turtle with an impenetrable shell made of adamantium.
- In the novel Gridlinked, the protagonists find an artifact composed of adamantium that was a prison for an energy being. It was commented that since humans only knew how to crystallize the metal that a race who could fashion objects out of it must be much more advanced.
- In the Warcraft Universe, the black dragon, Neltharian (also known as Deathwing) had adamantium plate scales welded to his body by goblins. In the MMORPG World of Warcraft, a player can receive an armor piece called "Ornate Adamantium Breastplate".
- In the MMORPG World of Warcraft starting with The Burning Crusade expansion pack, Adamantium can also be found as ore nodes for miners and made into various weapons and armor by players with higher level blacksmithing profession.
- In the MMORPG Maplestory, Adamantium is shown as an orange mineral which can be used to make equipment, weapons and plates.
- In "Heroes of Might and Magic IV" you could get a legendary item called the "adamantine breastplate" and "adamantine shield".
- In the film Lost In Space the alien "spiders" were described as having shells of adamantium (however, they could be easily destroyed by gunfire or rocket engines).
- Refined Adamantite is used in Everquest 2 as an ingredient in making tier-7 relic armor.
- In Galactic Civilizations 2, one of the higher armor technologies you can research is adamantium.
- One of the armor types in the game Outpost 2, although never used by any of the included missions or units.
- The Golden Age: A Romance of the Far Future, John C. Wright
- In the game RuneScape: Also called adamantite or, informally, addy. A type of metal, obviously hard; a high level material. It is an ore, which can be smelted into adamantium bars and then forged into weapons and armor. It can be found trimmed.
- In one episode of Samurai Jack, Aku created robots made of adamantium. Jack's sword was unable to cut through them without added strength, first provided by a cybernetic arm and then by the mystical power of his ancestors.
- Metal weapons in Titan Quest RPG Game
- Aizen Teppa of Grenadier - The Senshi of Smiles uses an adamantium cloth as a weapon
- In Baldur's Gate 2, based on the Dungeons and Dragons universe, the drow wear adamantium armor, which disintegrates in the sunlight.
- There are various adamantium weapons and armor in the RPG computer game Rage of Mages.
- Adamantium is one of the many ores dropped by monsters in the popular MMORPG Maplestory.
- Digi-Beetle's latest upgrade on body part was Adamantium Body in Digimon World 2
- In the RTS computer game Age of Mythology, the gates that seal Tartarus, eternal prison of Kronos and the other Titans, from the Underworld are noted as being constructed of adamantium.
