Returning from a delivery mission to the planet Cannibalon, Fry, Leela, and Bender announce their resignations to Professor Farnsworth. They reconsider when the Professor tells them he has scheduled a company vacation. It is a cruise on the maiden voyage of the largest space cruise ship ever built: the Titanic.
As the Planet Express team boards, they are stopped by Zapp Brannigan, who is the honorary captain of the Titanic for its maiden voyage. He tries to seduce Leela again, as he did on their last encounter. In an attempt to avoid Brannigan's unwanted advances, Leela claims she is engaged to Fry.
On the way to their room, Bender meets the Countess de la Roca, who he meets again after losing at craps.
Meanwhile, on the bridge, Brannigan plots a new course for the ship, leading through a swarm of comets. At the buffet, Amy unexpectedly runs into her parents, Leo and Inez, who immediately attempt to set Amy up with an unattractive fat man. In order to redirect her parents' attention, Amy claims Fry is her boyfriend.
Bender continues romancing the Countess, in several scenes that are blatant parodies of scenes from the movie Titanic.
In the swimming pool capsule, a limbo competition is being held. Hermes is urged to limbo, but declines, remembering a traumatic incident from twenty years ago. He was on the Earth Olympic limbo team, but during the 2980 Olympics, a little boy ran onto the field, wanting to be just like his hero Hermes. He tried to limbo under an Olympic level bar and broke his spine. Hermes has never limboed since then.
Zapp Brannigan takes time off from steering the ship to judge the limbo contest, and declares Leela the winner, despite her not having entered. As a prize, she and Fry are invited to dinner at the captain's table.
The Planet Express crew sits down to dinner. Unfortunately for Fry, both Zapp Brannigan and Amy's parents are present. However, before the fake relationships are exposed, Kif calls Brannigan back to the bridge. The new course has placed the ship in danger. Brannigan's attempt to correct the problem, though, results in the ship flying toward a black hole. Realizing the danger he has put them in Brannigan promotes Kif to Captain, so that he can go down with the ship while Brannigan escapes. Bender heads off to save the Countess, while the rest of the crew make their way to the escape pods.
On the way, an airlock door begins to close, blocking the crew's escape. Zoidberg holds it from closing all the way, but the door release is on the other side and no one is able to fit under the gap - except an Olympic limboer. Hermes resurrects his old limbo skills to squeeze under and hit the door release. Arriving at the escape pods, they meet Amy's parents, who have found Amy a new boyfriend they feel is suitable: Kif. Amy and Kif are immediately attracted to one another, thus beginning a relationship which continues throughout the series. After waiting as long as they could for Bender, the crew launches the escape pod. Bender leaps from the Titanic, Countess in tow. He grabs the escape pod, but they are overweight, and the Countess sacrifices herself to allow the others to escape.
Characters who first appear in this episode are:
- The Concept is a reference to Douglas Adams' Computer Game of the same name, Starship Titanic.
- The episode is a parody of the film Titanic, which incidentally was a co-production of 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures.
- During the scene where the ship starts to get sucked into the black hole, a variation of an instrumental used in the 1997 Titanic movie is played. In fact, a lot of the music used during the episode is based on the Titanic soundtrack (though only in style).
- On the audio commentary, David X. Cohen says "If you want to make an episode like this, mix one part Titanic, two parts The Love Boat, and one part Three's Company."
- The title comes from the famous 1958 docu-pic about the RMS Titanic, A Night to Remember, and the novel A Night to Remember by Walter Lord about the last night of the Titanic.
- The name of the bartender iZac is a dual reference to the personal computer iMac and the bartender Isaac in the TV series The Love Boat.
- The Countess de la Roca's name is a reference to producer Claudia de LaRoca (according to Matt Groening's DVD commentary).
- Zapp Brannigan christens the ship by throwing a jar containing Leonardo DiCaprio's head at it. This is a parody of the traditional practice of throwing a bottle of champagne at new ships, and also a reference to the 1997 film Titanic, in which Leonardo DiCaprio was one of the main stars. However, the real Titanic was never christened. According to the DVD commentary, they originally invited DiCaprio to voice on the episode, but he declined. The smashing of his jar against the ship was the show's way of revenge, David X. Cohen humorously says "ha! Take that!" as the jar is smashed.
- When Zapp Brannigan decides to change course he says: Divert power from the shields, full speed ahead. Yet another Star Trek reference.
- The sound made by Bender as he was sketching The Countess was that of a dot-matrix printer.
- When Hermes' wife commands him to release the airlock, Amy's nose is missing.
- Hermes is able to limbo under the airlock, yet no one else, including Hermes, is able to crawl under the airlock.
- This is the first episode where Fry and Leela kiss.
