From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The HK 23 is a belt-fed light machine gun using the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO cartridge manufactured by the German arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch. It is capable of semi-automatic (single shots) as well as full automatic fire.
HK 23E "Export": The HK 23E has a longer receiver, rear drum sights adjustable for windage that are graduated up to 1000 meters, and is capable of select fire (3-round bursts).
GR-9: A "sanitized" variant of the HK 23 used by NATO special operations forces. It is distinguished by an adjustable-power self-illuminated optical sight permanently fixed to the receiver in the place of iron sights. It can also accept a clip-on beam projector on the receiver that can only be seen by an operator wearing night-vision goggles.
HK 73: An experimental variant of the HK 23 that used a linkless feed system from an integral 200-round ammo hopper that could be reloaded using stripper clips or individual rounds. It was introduced in 1984 but was taken off the market two years later in 1986 due to poor sales. It is similar to the HK 23 except that it weighs 14 lbs. 5 oz. (6.5 kg.) unloaded.
HK 73E: This model is identical to the HK 73, except it is based on the improved HK 23E.
